17th century
Commissioned in the 17th century by the Malvar brothers, deans of Santiago Cathedral, Pazo da Parda has remained in the same family for four hundred years. Across its 14,862 m² estate, the main manor, private chapel, hórreo, caretaker's cottage and gardens preserve the character of a noble Galician house with unusual completeness. Its history includes a visit by King Alfonso XIII's Council of Ministers, commemorated by a stone dated 1620.
The 675 m² main house rises around a crenellated tower and thick granite walls, arranged over two principal floors with the tower above. Its 16 bedrooms and seven bathrooms sit among carved coffered ceilings, traditional tilework, fine timber joinery, glazed Galician galleries and furniture passed through generations. The main dining room retains an elaborate star-patterned ceiling. The ground-floor service wing has its own kitchen, linked by dumbwaiter to the family kitchen above, while the principal rooms include generous salons, a library, studies and bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
Almost three hectares of romantic parkland surround the house. An avenue of magnolias forms a natural tunnel through the grounds, century-old hydrangeas line the paths, and a central fountain gives order to a garden designed as much for wandering as for arrival. The estate faces south, bringing light across the principal rooms and planted grounds.
The 85 m² stone chapel gives the estate its true pazo character, with a carved baroque altarpiece, sacristy retaining its original liturgical furnishings, a marble chessboard floor and separate entrances for family and public use. Nearby, an exceptionally large hórreo stands on twelve stone pillars above a storage building — a rare survival of its kind. A modernised 150 m² Portuguese-style caretaker's house completes the group while retaining its traditional appearance.
Despite its secluded grounds, the pazo stands in central Pontevedra beside the estuary, with direct access to the motorway and the pedestrian old town, home to the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor and the Pontevedra Museum. The RENFE station is roughly 1 km away, with Alvia and regional services; Vigo Airport is about 28 km or 35–40 minutes by car, and Santiago Airport about 43 km or 45–50 minutes. Vigo and Santiago are within easy reach, while Sanxenxo's beaches are around 20 minutes away, with O Grove, Combarro, Meis golf, Mondariz and La Toja completing the wider Rías Baixas setting. The scale and address lend themselves to a private residence, boutique hotel, events venue or institutional headquarters.
